Car:

Koper has good highway connections from various European cities. Beware of the need for an e-vignette for driving on Slovenian highways!

Parking rules are enforced in the city. Most of the parking zones are payable, some of the public parkings are payable only part-time during the day and some are free of charge during weekends. (The official web page with information about Koper parking is available in Slovenian and Italian language. Feel free to contact us if you need help with that.)

Bus:

Koper has bus connections with both Ljubljana and Trieste, as well as other Slovenian coastal towns, and Croatia. There are three main scheduled inter-city bus companies: FlixBus, Črnja tours and Arriva Slovenia. Both FlixBus and Črnja tours provide frequent international services, and Arriva provides domestic bus service with some international routes including Trieste. Additionally, Nomago sometimes provides some regional inter-city services.

Tickets can be purchased in advance online from FlixBus, Nomago (check the Slovenian version of the web page for the timetable), or the Ljubljana Bus Station website.

Train:

There is no longer any direct train service to Trieste, but there is a slow (and scenic) route connecting Koper and Ljubljana a few times per day. See the Slovenian Railways website for train schedules within Slovenia (the schedules are available up to three months in advance).
Slovenia has train connections with Croatia, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Czechia, Germany, and Switzerland, and is indirectly connected also to other European countries. Slovenia is a part of the Eurail Global Pass system, which means that this ticket can also be used to travel to Slovenia.
Some tickets may be purchased through the Deutsche Bahn or ÖBB web pages.
In case of a travel by train to Trieste, there are several options of getting to Koper:

  • By bus: FlixBus (advance booking is necessary), Arriva Slovenia (please note that Arriva offers no connections on Sundays).

  • Directly to your final destination in Koper by booking a GoOpti shuttle (shared van) transfer. Please note that advance booking is necessary.

Taxi:

There are several local taxi companies that offer services in and around Koper as well as to and from the city of Trieste. We suggest the following taxi companies:

It is advisable to contact the company an hour or more in advance to make arrangements so that you do not have to wait for their arrival. As of June 2022, the prices range anywhere between 1-2 EUR/km with an additional 2 EUR starting price and a possible 20-25 EUR per waiting hour.
